The second Jack heard footsteps coming, he panicked, threw the invisibility cloak over himself, and pressed against the wall, trying his best to stay still and not make a sound, though he couldn’t control his frantic breathing. Jack thought he knew where he was. He didn’t. And after a while of sneaking around the woods in the dark, he was lost. When Snow regaled Flake with stories from when she was in the caves, she made it sound like she had a fantastic time there, talking animatedly about the things she saw and the games she played and how interesting everything looked. And while Flake loved to hear that she seemed perfectly fine, he was also worried that there might’ve been something wrong that he didn’t know about. What she was secretly poisoned or something? “Snow’s awake!” Jack shouted to Flake, who was sitting in the library of the Grand House. He was reading the Unseen Potions book, which he promptly dropped once he heard what Jack said. “She is?!” he exclaimed. Once upon a time, in a kingdom full of caves, there was a man. And one day, he met something he had never seen before. “Monsters! They’re here!” he shouted, running into the plaza. He looked like a mess. His clothes were torn up and he had a gash on his shoulder. “They’re coming!” Dr. Blossoms was supposed to be the best doctor (or healer, as they called it here) in the area, but Jack wasn’t sure why. So far she hadn’t done any real healing, just kept on taking notes and inspecting Snow and Flint, as well as asking Jack irrelevant questions. The questions were actually the only reason why he was allowed in the room. Everyone else was outside, pacing around the hallways of the Grand House where the Council of the Tree have offices and meeting rooms.

The first time Jack went in the dark place that led to the Fearsome Forest, it was scary. Now, with about ten other people, the whole dark and creepy atmosphere was ruined by the many torches they had, illuminating the pathway, and the conversations everyone was having. Flake kept on having some conversation with Rose, Chief Phoenix was complaining, and Chief Alya kept on pestering Jack with questions he didn’t have the answer to. He was scared that his dad would somehow be alerted by the noises they were making. Chapter Fifty-Three: In Which A Plan Fails
